We made it! That was a long trip! Bangkok's airport is super nice - best one I'd seen all day by far. Boston started the haggling early with our first taxi. The guy wanted double of the normal fare, and B wasn't having it. Nevermind that it was 1 am, and we needed to go to bed. It was the principle of the matter (and about $5 difference). So we pulled our bags out of the trunk because that guy wasn't going lower fast enough. Next taxi, Boston decided to just haggle once we got inside and had to ask twice for him to turn on the meter. I just stayed silent throughout the whole thing. Normally I try to learn a bit of the language and use (butcher) it with people like taxi drivers, but Thai has all these intimidating tones. Needless to say, it was great that B took charge and knew what he was doing! I'll try talking to people today. It's 9 am, and we've just woken up in our minimalist hotel room that has no walking room with our luggage on the floor. But at 1500 baht a night for 3 people ($44 total), we really can't complain. Yes, there are holes in our bathroom's ceiling, but it's clean, safe, quiet, has soft beds (a real find!), and has free WIFI. And as Boston says, "This is nice!" which does make you wonder what kind of places he's been staying in.
