I posted another one today right before this. I'm sitting in the Tokyo airport 19 hours from DFW and my soft, soft bed. See ya soon!

Day 22: Manila "Boston, what will you when we're not bugging you 24 hours a day?!" "Walk around in my underwear!"

Last day! I can’t believe it. We let Boston sleep in for once and went to lunch at an Indian restaurant around the corner from his apt. My chicken kabob was good, but Kavita didn’t approve of her dosa. “That’s what you get when a Northern Indian lady cooks a Southern Indian dish.” Don’t worry, Mrs. Nair. You’re still #1 cook in your daughter’s heart.

Gotta love this taxi

After lunch I wanted to go to the WWII memorial to take some pics. The taxi driver who took us there had crazy long nails on both hands with just the left painted black. He had a mullet so for a while I was trying to decide if it was a woman, but I decided that it must just be a very strange man. The WWII memorial grounds are really pretty, and they are very strict with your actions inside. You need a photo id, and you can’t run or walk on the grass.

Afterwards we headed to the mall where the pearl negotiations would go down. We walked around for a bit before Monica, Boston’s lady friend, joined us to try to get an idea of what we want, but honestly, it was way too overwhelming. Don’t give me a thousand choices for a necklace. I just don’t care enough! Luckily Monica is a trained pearl buyer/price haggler, and once I decided what I wanted (with her help, of course) she would send us away to get down to business. They go lower with just locals; white people drive up prices. At one stand we didn’t like any of the strands and as we walked away, Monica said she had to pick the next stand carefully hoping it wasn’t a relative of the previous one. They wouldn’t sell to us even if we wanted to buy because they feel that it’s bad for business. Luckily we found a good stand that hadn’t had a sale that day so they were willing to go very low. First sales of the day are considered lucky. It only took an hour or so, but it was a bit tiring and I didn’t even really do anything! I gave B props for doing this 3 times (although each time with help!). Just deciding what you want and then doing a hard negotiation makes you wonder if it’s worth it to even get them. Since mine were gifts, I persevered, but had they been for me and I been alone – I bet I would have given up. I won’t miss having to haggle about prices. Thanks a million, Monica!

After dinner, Monica had to go do some work, so we headed for …. one… last… time!

Daily Massage Report

We went back to TonTon (don’t mess with a good thing) for a full body this time. Kavita wasn’t feeling well, so B & I had to face them on our own. This one focused more on the upper body – back, arms, and head. I got many elbows in the back! “Get at it, TonTon lady!” While I would prefer more foot and leg action, I was pretty happy. I give the TonTon full body: 4 stars – not a bad way to go out!

Day 21: Bohol to Manila "Don't let his calves kill you."

Above: Manila jeepney - basically an open air bus whose frame is from a leftover from WWII that they decorate like crazy

We took a 10 am flight to Manila - back to civilization! - and were picked up by Boston's new super nice new landlord, Eric. I say super nice because he has hooked B up. Holy crazy nice apt! Boston's new place - which he hadn't seen since he picked it out and was bare - is awesome. 2 bed/2 1/2 bath - leather couch - 2 40 in flat screens - great dining room table & chairs - all new appliances - new beds - 10th floor of a doorman building - really nice downtown area- wowsers. Boston told him what he wanted, but I can't believe this guy did it all!! AND he gets a nice car - Honda CRV - as part of the deal. Eric leases out cars, so of course, he gives one to B. B didn't even have to move himself in; he paid Enca, his maid/personal assistant to do it while we were gone. I got to meet Enca, his Filipino mother, whom I've heard all about. She seems great. I meant to get a picture but forgot. As soon as we got there, she took our mounds of dirty laundry and got started so we could face Manila with clean underoos the next day.

After unloading, we headed for lunch (even after going to town on B's Chips Ahoy Enca had already picked up - American junk food is a comfort after 3 weeks) and did some shopping. K needed a tennis skirt because one of the guys we met during the Nut's Huts lunch set up a tennis match for her with his friend here at the Manila Polo Club. She wanted to prep for her team's state semi-finals that she'll be playing the day after she gets back. We dropped her off with John-John and his enormous calves for a couple hours of tennis. Apparently he is the 3rd best player at the best club in Manila, so she had her work cut out for her. She got a great workout in and a few tips on her game (along with a great calf increasing exercise - ok, not really - but he should have given a hint as to how he does it!). Meanwhile, B & I went by his school (really more of community college just by its huge size) which is very nice. Manila has really nice areas with large shanty towns mixed in around them. I would not consider this a 3rd world country here, but I can see it in Bohol.

Daily Massage Report! (We're baaaaaaaaaaaaack!)
After Eric overhead us talking about wanting a massage, he suggested we go to his friend's place, TonTon Thai massage. When K mentioned to John-John that we were going there, he gave it a great endorsement also as the best place in Manila. I'm thinking - ok, this place is going to be good. Love it - John-John likes TonTon. They were all right! We all got a foot massage, and I dare say, it was one of the best I've had! They started with our hands (very good sign!), and then proceeded to go to town on our feet - pretty hard, but never painful. Afterwards we got bonus areas of back, neck, and shoulders. Overall TonTon gets 5 STARS!! (And you know I don't give that out often!!) This place is within walking distance to B's apt. Lucky! (said in Napolean Dynamite's voice)Afterwards we went to a late dinner in at a Thai food place in another nice area of Manila called Greenbelt - lots of great restaurants, shopping, bars, coffee & dessert shops. Dinner was good, and then we went next door to Cafe Havana for a drink before K fell asleep. (We didn't quite make it - she actually fell asleep at the table.)

No other pics from today - more tomorrow!
I did post twice today to get caught up - so be sure you read the one before this!

Day 20: Bohol "Remember me"

Above: View from patio at hotel

After sleeping for 9 hours (after a 2 hr nap), I was feeling great at 6:30 am! Apparently I had a one day cold or I actually bought crack instead of sinutabs and am feeling the euphoric effects. One never knows with these foreign pharmacies. I hung out by the pool (working on being just a little less white) all morning reading. K & B went to town to get a few things. For lunch we went to the Bee Farm down the street which is an organic restaurant/hotel with an ocean view. We got the buffet (not because we’re sloppy hogs) so we could try several different things. This was the best food we’ve had since arriving in Bohol. The Filipino food we’ve had leaves much to be desired. Why didn’t we go here earlier?!

After lunch we went motorbiking for several hours all around the island – super fun! Kids were yelling hello to us everywhere we went as they got out of school. Kavita rode with Boston as he has a better handle on the bike than I do (as seen with the post-scuba near-van experience). We rode through neighborhoods, by schools, on dirt & paved roads, past shacks, skinny cows, houses, tons of flowers, a really old church, goats, and many, many mangy dogs. I think we saw 3 other white people the whole time. B & K were ahead of me and created quite a circus. Uniformed schoolchildren in groups would open mouthed stare, giggle, shout hello, and watch them as they drove on. They wouldn’t even really notice me until I started to pass them – very funny to watch.

We stopped for drinks at a roadside hut/store an hour or so into our journey. We made some friends – old & young – sober & not so much. I’ll let you guess which categories the grandma with the cigar falls into! After I showed her her picture she told me, "Remember me!" To which I replied, "Oh, don't worry! I will!"

Once it started to get dark, we figured we should head for the hotel as that’s usually when it rains also. I read in the pool for a little while until the monsoon rain started in. For dinner we decided to go light with vanilla ice cream with mango. We’re health nuts. After a riveting game of Phase 10 in which I was declared the winner (even after an enormous amount of smack talk from my brother), we went to sleep.

Day 19: Bohol "Nut's Huts"

Today we did a tour of the Chocolate Hills which are 1268 - 50m high mounds that during dry season appear chocolate from the dead grass. Since it's rainy season though, they were a bit green. Boston ran into one of his fellow teachers there doing a bike race that ended at the top of the Hills. Afterwards we went to a tarsier center to see the teeny tiny monkeys that remind me of Smeagol from Lord of the Rings. There was a larger monkey there in a cage whose long arms stole the glasses off a guy's face who got a bit too close. We ran into B's friend, Kate, again with her husband and friends there. They invited us to have lunch with them off the river. We hired a small boat driven by a kid no older than 14 to take us down to the waterfall at the end and then up to Nut's Huts for lunch. There are huts you can rent out that no doubt have no electricity and maybe running water. This is the kind of place where they don't expect you to shower for days on end. They have a fun restaurant though so high on a hill from the river that feels like a treehouse. They had wonderful rolls and so-so food but awesome views.Afterwards we took the boat back, and it started to rain. And by rain, I mean monsoon-style pouring. Luckily, it has tapered off by the time we got to our stop where our van was waiting.
That morning I woke up with a pounding head - probably sinus - so once we got home at 4:30 pm I took a couple sinutabs and promptly passed out. I woke up at 6:30 to find K asleep. I got up for a bit so I wouldn't wake up in the middle of the night, but after some chocolate cake at 9 I was ready to go back to bed. Tough life, out here!

Day 18: Bohol "I can't believe I didn't hit that van."

B & I had scuba this morning around 9 am. We hopped on our motorbikes and took off towards the large beach and Genesis Divers. Yes, there was more staring; I'm still a spectacle. This time I just smiled and said hello, and then they would break into a large grin and say it back. Guess I just need to break the ice? With every islander! I needed gas, so we stopped at a roadside hut and bought 1 liter for $1 out of a coke bottle. It's not legal, but that's how it's done here.

Kavita went running and had a similar experience with the staring. Yes, Miss India is visiting also! Since no one runs here, she was asked several times where she was going. After answering once and explaining it was for exercise, they seemed to understand it better and let her go on her way. At one area, a group of workers she passed yelled out to a guy waiting for a bus who was asleep on the bench coming up. He sits up to have look also as she runs by. Hot Stuff passing through!

SCUBA

Scuba was great! We couldn't do a boat dive at a nearby island because it was only the two of us wanting to go today, so we did a dive a ways off the main beach. I was skeptical, but it was pretty great. The first dive was a wall dive, and as I looked down as we descended, I was thinking, "This is preeeeeeeeeeeeety deep." I didn't look at the gauge when we got all the way down because I was too distracted by all the creatures. Boston told me later that we went to 108 ft! Hello! That's much deeper than I was expecting. They don't advise past 60 ft for my certification, but I'm still alive so I guess it's alright! We went by several caves and coral reefs where we could see moray eels, giant fish about 5 ft long, another kind of starfish I haven't seen before, and just loads of fish. Good day!
Afterwards while trying to get up a tight hill crowded with cars and people, I hit the accelerator instead of the brake (It's all the same hand!) and almost ran into a parked van. Luckily I swerved to miss it, but then it got a little crazy with overcorrecting and my feet flying out for balance losing my flip flop. So I stopped to get it but didn't pick where very well (middle of the hill). Then I couldn't get going again so a bunch of local men came over to help hold it. I was all freaked out though from my near accident and wanted to start at the top of the hill. They, of course, don't understand and are yelling at me, "Get on! Get on!" I'm yelling back, "I can't! I can't!" Boston was silent which really was the best choice. Finally the men realize I'm not comfortable starting in the middle of hill and help me almost to the top. I get it started, and we make it back to the hotel. Phew. Clearly, still have some work to do.

We hung out at the quiet hotel patio (we're the only guests!) reading, blogging, working, and eating with the intention to go back to Alona beach (scene of my motorbiking klutziness) for dinner. However, rainy season finally reared its ugly head, and it rained for about 3 hours. After today's scene I don't think riding in the rain is a good idea, so we just stayed put. No massages....Maybe tomorrow...

Day 17: Kuala Lumpur to Bohol "This is the vacation from the vacation."

On the road again

After a brutal 1 am flight (much harder than I thought) to Manila and then the 8 am flight to Bohol, we have arrived in the Philippines and at the beach! This is a small island that reminds me of Vieques but is even less developed in the area we're in. There are no stores or anything for at least 20 minutes - only some beach resorts and huts on the road. We got out of the tiny airport after yet another stampede off the plane. Most places we've gone people are lacking basic courtesy that we have at home with things like lining up to get off a plane or bus. At home, you wait for the rows in front of you to get their luggage and get off. Here it is every man for himself. As soon as the plane or bus arrives, everyone stands up, gets in the aisle, and moves as far towards the exit as possible. If you don't do the same, you lose your spot! I've tried to assert myself but still have some manners. When getting off this last flight, there was a crying child behind me. The dad and child were in the aisle - ready to get off asap - so, of course, I didn't try to get ahead of them. Ok, then there's the mom - let's let her go, too. Ok, now here's a nun wanting to go also. Ok, go on - who stops a nun?! But after that - I'm jumping in! People will cut right in front of you if you aren't EXACTLY behind the line. One flight the guy by the window was tapping Kavita who was in the aisle asking if she could move so he could get out. Where is she going to go when the aisle is already packed?! Just wait the 2 minutes, buddy.

Outside the airport were these great tuktuk type vehicles which were very different looking from others. Usually you sit behind the driver, but these basically have a fancy sidecar with a cover. Most have biblical verses on them also. Philippines is all Catholic - all the time. Marge, tell your dad!We arrived at our b&b, La Pernela which is really gorgeous property. There is not a sandy beach nearby, but we do have an ocean view from the hotel and cute hut with chairs right by the water. We wanted to get something right on the beach, but this was half the price of those places at just $65/night. Frankly, folks, we're about out of money! Ok - I have more, but I want to stay on budget! We don't have hot water, but we do have a separated shower. We didn't want to pay the extra money since the water is lukewarm anyway. I figure if Kavita can handle it, so can I. She sets our standard since Boston would pretty much stay in a hut on the beach with hole in ground if he could.
There is a large sandy beach about 10 minutes away by motorbike (oh yeah - we're ridin'), but there's a small rocky area to get in the water just a couple minutes down the road. That's where I modeled with the banca boat.We were so tired that we had a fairly lazy day. Boston rode into town to get a few things, and I took a short ride by myself towards the larger beach. I noticed that everyone: men, women, children, cows, and occasionally goat were staring at me. At first I just noticed the children were very friendly and want to say hi - no problem there. But every man watched me go by. Yes, Bohol, Mrs. America has arrived! At first I thought I was a little improper because I was wearing shorts and a bathing suit cover-up, or maybe the fact that I was the ONLY person wearing a helmet. But it occurred to me later that I was the only white girl on a bike around there - must have been quite a sight as I'm quite white (working on the tan currently!) and not many girls are driving motorbikes in general.

Our b&b has a small menu, so we ate here, read, and ordered...a massage!

Daily Massage Report

Today's massage took place on the roof patio of our b&b - very nice! Our host had 2 ladies in scrubs (is that really necessary?) come by. Apparently here they do more oil massages than a dry Thai style, so by the time it's over you feel like a greased up pig ready for roasting. While we probably would prefer the dry style, we don't argue, just do as we're told. K & I went first, and the back portion of the event was...AMAZING! (She could give Rudy a run for his money!) She worked over all the knots (my pack is 12 kg now - I blame shopping) with her seriously strong hands- ahhhh! The legs and the head were a little soft, but the hands and feet were great, too though I wish they were longer. K had the same take as me. Boston, the lucky dog, got both of them (one on his back, one at his feet) at the same time for an hour with a foot scrub - must be nice! However, after seeing how he has worn previous masseuses out with his maws (man paws - this refers to both his hands and feet), they probably needed to tag team him for their sake. Needless to say, he enjoyed it! Despite needing another shower afterwards, I give in-house La Pernela massage: 4 stars. 1 star lost due to oil in my freshly washed hair and being weak with the legs

After a quick dinner here again under the stars on the roof, we went to bed super early. Maybe it's the long travel day, that we were really tired and did very little, or that's it's been almost 3 weeks gone, but I'm finally getting homesick. It's been a lot of fun, but I'm ready for regular life again - work, American food (with a healthy dose of Thai though!), soccer, my bed! How do people do this for months or years at a time?!

No new pictures really, but I've done 2 postings close together. Be sure you saw the one before this.
